Meet the Women Farm Entrepreneurs

At Local Taste Discoveries, we take you off the beaten track to meet some of the women producing unique boutique food and gifts in the Scenic Rim.

Increasingly, many of these farmers and producers are women. Depending on which tour you take, you’ll meet women like Carolyn and Dallas, the inspiring mother and daughter duo at Towri Sheep Cheeses. Genevieve Windley is the General Manager and entrepreneur behind the Scenic Rim Farm Shop and Rachel Watkins runs the adjoining Elderflower Farm. Kay Tommerup is from Tommerup’s Dairy Farm, a 6th generation working farm and Gem Irwin is the founder of local boutique soap company Coco & Myrtle.

All of these women have a passion for farming and fresh produce. They have done the hard yards with farming yet found an inner strength and reserve to push the boundaries of possibilities. They have all seen a way to take farm produce and use it to create much sought after delicious foods and lifestyle products.

Towri Sheep farm is set on 300 acres with some 350 sheep. It is set up with a sheep milking dairy, cheese room, farm café and gift shop. There is plenty of hands-on work here for Carolyn and Dallas creating sensational sheep milk yogurt and cheeses. The tea gardens are beautifully cared for, and cute sheep motifs and statues abound. The gift shop is stocked with sheep inspired items, especially for ‘ewe’. You will probably get a chance to meet the resident Jack Russell dogs as well as the friendly sheep.

Not far away is Tommerup’s Dairy Farm. This 6th generation family farm has stopped supplying large milk processors and has refocused their business to value add all products on farm. The result is the most amazing artisan products made from Jersey cow milk and cream. Enjoy Jersey Girl cultured butter, crème fraiche, double cream, yoghurt and gourmet ice cream, all made on the farm by Kay. The farm also produces heritage breed pigs that are milk fed and pasture raised for pork, Rose dairy veal and pastured eggs from free range hens. All the animals are free range and the pastures are chemical free.

Genevieve Windley is part of a farming family. Genevieve is the creator of Scenic Rim Farm Box, a way of bringing country produce to the city. Tour guests get to experience a visit to a working farm where Genevieve explains about the crops and the seasons. There is often the opportunity to pick your own fresh produce straight from the paddock. At her nearby Scenic Rim Farm Shop and Café, Genevieve stocks many locally made artisan food gourmet products. Enjoy a cuppa with a cake that features local produce such as carrot cake or chocolate and beetroot cake.

Next door, you’ll find Elderflower Farm. Florist Rachel loves growing heritage and country style blooms which make the most beautiful arrangements. The rustic flower and gift shop is stocked with wonderful treasures for the keen gardener and home décor lover.

Coco and Myrtle is a unique boutique soap manufacturer founded by Gem Irwin. Gem sources local produce and other natural ingredients for her soaps. Unique soaps such as spiced pumpkin, carrot, beetroot, and cucumber feature along with traditional varieties such as oat, honey and vanilla. There is even a dog washing soap.

All of these women have had a vision to create fabulous, unique and boutique products. The products are lovingly made and beautifully packaged and sold at great farm gate shops. The provenance of the produce is right there on the farm, and the ‘terroir’ of the clean, green, Scenic Rim region shines through.

Come and join either our Scenic Farm Gate Tour or Girl’s Day Out Tour to meet a few of these inspiring women and their locally made produce.
